Varieties of Roses
Listed here are some exhibition varieties, which are of general interest and excellence:
Ben Cant
As a rich crimson Hybrid Perpetual exhibition rose, Ben Cant is indeed superb. It has the broad, smooth petals for which rosarians crave, it
looks as if it would be welcome in the garden as in the show.
Frau Karl Druschki
Belonging to the Hybrid Perpetual class, it produces blooms with long, somewhat pointed centre, which will prove invaluable on the exhibition
board by reason of their pure white color. The plant has a good constitution, and grows well in most gardens.
Lady Roberts
Passing for a moment to the lovely Tea roses, which are far more perpetual in flowering than the majority of the so called Hybrid Perpetuals,
a charming novelty is found in Lady Roberts. The plant is of very vigorous habit. Like so many of the Tea roses, the combination of color is so
peculiar. An apricot yellow with redish suffusions.
Gladys Harkness
Shades of pink are always appreciated in flowers, and several of the roses tinged with this color are second to none in general excellence.
Gladys Harkness appeals strongly to those who like larger roses which show splendid form in combination with size. The plant is of free habit,
and produces its deep salmon pink flowers very abundantly.
White Maman Cochet
An exquisite flower in every respect, and the vigorous habit of the plant will commend it to all growers. It is indispensable in every class
where Tea roses are admissible.
Mildred Grant
Turning to the Hybrid Tea section. An exhibition rose it is absolute perfection, and no greater praise could be bestowed. The color is creamy
white, with a rose suffusion.
Killarney
Has proved itself well capable of producing exceptional blooms for exhibition as well as grand ornament in the garden. It is of a decidedly
attractive shade of pale pink.
Garden or Decorative Roses
Crimson Rambler
This superb rose makes a noble pillar, hedge or fence, and for a trellis or summer house is beyond compare. Its remarkably vigorous
constitution rendered it suitable for every one to grow who could command a situation affording plenty of fresh air, and its universal
appreciation undoubtedly added to the general popularity of roses.
Queen Alexandra
Belonging to the same class as Crimson Rambler is Queen Alexandra. It is the equal of Crimson Rambler, and the color, a lovely shade of rose
pink, makes it very desirable in our gardens.
Gruss an Teplitz
A bush of it can scarcely be out of place in the garden, and when well established will produce thousands of the beautiful scarlet crimson
blooms, whose handsome glow is accentuated by the splended leafage.
Lady Battersea
A rose in a thousand for garden decoration, as it is remarkably free in the production of exquisite cherry crimson blooms.
Ards Rover
It sometimes happens that the magnificent Ards Rover comes large enough for exhibition, but usually its size is against it for that purpose.
It is a deep crimson flower of the Hybrid Perpetual section, that never fails to please.
Leuchstern
A single variety of the multiflora group is Leuchstern. It is of the most vigorous habit, and becomes clothed with the bright rose, white
centered flowers, whose beauty is considerably enhanced by their elegant stamens.
Irish Beauty
Another single flowered variety, of the Tea section, is Irish Beauty. The pure white flowers are somewhat short lived, they are produced in
such rapid succession as to afford a continuous display.
Jersey Beauty
One of the most admirable is the soft yellow Jersey Beauty, whose large single flowers are delicately beautiful.
Una
Produces a marvelously beautiful effect in the garden. This it owes largely to the buds being clear yellow while the expanded blossoms are
creamy white.
Corallina
We must have in our gardens roses that bloom in the autumn, as well as those which beautify the garden in the summer, and such is the
Corallina. The color is rosy crimson, and in a bed it is superb, the bud state is peculiarly pleasing.
