Is it possible to grow roses from seeds?

My neighbours have a wonderful yellow rose in their garden, now that they’ve bloomed they have started to build seeds - can I use them to grow my own roses?

Yes it is possible, but not as easy as with cuttings of rose stems.
I found this site which gives very good instructions on growing roses from seed.

Growing roses from seed is an extremely difficult procedure, involving controlled temperatures and cross pollination in a greenhouse.
Germination is slow, flowering would require several years and the seedlings would not necessarily be true to the parent.
If your neighbours are prepared to give a cutting,it may be possible to root this. The procedure is to take a cutting of the current year’s growth, some 18 inches long.
Cut just below a leaf joint, remove the top 6 inches of unripe wood and the foliage from the base.
Wet the base, dip into hormone rooting compound and plant firmly into a pot of cutting compost adding a little sharp sand.
Keep moist but not sodden,in a greenhouse or porch and the cutting may well root.Incidentally, allowing hips to set means the rose will cease to flower this season. It maybe that the hips are attractive, otherwise it’s best to remove them.

All new Rose varieties were grown from seed. They are not really that hard to grow, but the plants will not be the same as the parents. Those yellow roses might very well produce red or pink or nay other color flowers. Grown from seed take two years usually to get flowers. Many will bloom the first year but they tend to be smaller.
