growing roses in arkansas?
Can anyone tell me about growing roses in Arkansas. I recently bought a house and the roses are beautiful, but I think they should have been trimed and taken care of. Is there any publication to tell me the correct method of maintaining the roses I have and planting new ones.

Several websites available. Google roses and see what you get. Do try to get information related to your growing zone- which I think is 7 or 8.
Have fun.

    Greetings from Southeast Missouri!

The same thing happened to me. We bought a house and the lady before us had a beautiful rose garden. I had to learn all about roses quickly!

If you go to Lowe’s or Home Depot you can find lots of rose books, or you can download a free rose guide from the link I’ve posted below.

You know, though, I have found that we can go overboard trying to keep roses perfect. One person says, “Prune ‘em now!” Others will say, “My mom always said never to prune them now.”

I have finally decided that this is the easiest way to take care of roses in our area:

    1) Prune the dead limbs off the roses in the early spring.
    2) Feed with 12-12-12 fertilizer in early spring, mid summer, and early fall.
    3) Push mulch in a mound around the root “onion” in the fall to protect the rose for winter
    4) Uncover the root “onion” in the spring
    5) When you cut your gorgeous blooms, always cut right above a 5 leaf node so that another bloom will form

I think that’s just about as easy as you can get and still get to enjoy your roses! Good luck!
