Roses are symbols of grace, romance and beauty, and are considered as one of the most beautiful flowers in the world. Although roses are thought to be a hard flower to plant, in fact they are now easy to grow. Once you know the secrets of growing magnificent roses, you will find them to be easy to please and great plants to have in your garden.
Unlike any other flowers, roses do need daily attention, but for someone who plants and grows roses this is an easy job: Just follow a few proper steps and you'll end up growing magnificent roses.
Roses need water, as all other plants in the world. The more water they can get from the soil, the more colorful they will be, and bloom in greatness when the time comes. Roses need at least one inch of water per week. This water needs to get to the roots of the roses; the underground roots are the part of roses that need the most nourishment of water. Roses have developed deep roots because they need to get as much water as they can to survive. Watering roses will encourage them to grow even deeper roots, and consequentially grow stronger and more beautiful. Less watering will mean shallow roots and less attractive roses.
Another thing to consider is fertilizing your roses. When roses find good soil, they are able to survive without your help in feeding them. Good soils have natural living organisms that create nutrients for the roots of the roses to gather and to feed themselves. Overusing fertilizers can ruin the balance of these natural organisms and can end up ruining the roses. It may also happen that your roses will become addicted to man-made fertilizers and will reject natural nutrients from the soil. The best way to fertilize roses is to apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring when the roses are coming out of their period of dormancy during winter. And do the same just before your roses go back to dormancy when the blooms disappear; this is the time when your roses are storing energy for their dormancy period. Just never fertilize after midsummer. You can use organic and inorganic fertilizers, with the advantage for organic fertilizers that do not harm the natural helpful organisms in the soil.
Aside from watering and fertilizing, pruning is also a very important step in caring for roses. The best time to do it is in spring time, just after your roses have come out of their winter dormant period. The objective of pruning is to remove from the rose all the dead branches, heads and canes. The rose will have then a space to breathe and to receive air and sunlight, keeping it healthy. Pruning can also be used as a tool to shape your roses, especially climbing roses. You can also prune your roses after they bloom, and by removing the roses in bloom you will encourage them to grow.
Caring for roses is a time consuming job with all the steps to do in caring for roses. It just needs patience, knowledge and skill. After all the work, it feels very gratifying to see the fruit of your labor. There is nothing better than to display your roses in your garden, inside your house or offer them to family and friends.
